A couple weeks ago, I was talking to my MTG friends, and I said that I wanted to make a Blue Green Madness deck. The initial response of one of my friends was
"Why? It's impossible to make a blue green madness deck considering that there are only 10 madness cards in existance. And why blue green?" So I explained to him that it was a popular type 2 deck. So, over the course of 2 days, it changed to
"I'm still thinking about a blue green madness deck"
"No, everyone uses that kind of deck. Think of something else"
"Dude, you've never even seen anybody who uses blue green madness. You wouldn't have even known about it if I hadn't told you about it."
That's the second time he ever complained about originality. The other time was when I tried to model my brother's black/white/blue control deck, which, at the times, was ultimate to us. But, each of us has at leat 2 tribal decks, and he doesn't complain. I have a creaturelss sligh, he has a blue black control (although now it's less of a control deck and more of a "let's see how many random rares I can throw into a deck" deck.). I only once complained about his when he made a red black land destruction discard deck about 4 days after I made mine.
As it turns out, though, I eventually gave up on the UGM, but I did make a blue green madness channeler ping deck. It actually works pretty well.
So, here's a few questions.
1) Which is better to build/play, a deck made mostly out out of commons that has very good focus, or a deck made mostly out of rares that has very little focus (assuming that they perform about the same)?
2) Is it better to win because of one card/combo, or because of the all around quality of your deck?
3) Which is the best kind of victory: One where you massacre your opponent, one where you and your opponent are almost even but you edge him/her out, or one where you start out doing really badly but come back from behind and win?
4) What tribes/creature types do you consider to be the most timmyish/n00bish?
