For anyone who hasn't noticed, Wizards is trying to make "timmy" a more viable strategy. For as long as I can remember, casual players have usually leaned towards timmy/big creature play and tournaments have revolved around quick Johnny/combo play. So how do you remedy the situation? You can slow down things like counterspell a little by making it cost an extra 1 mana (Cancel) but that can only do so much. So now it seems the solution is to make timmy faster, and they are making REALLY big creatures REALLY cheap.
See, an upcoming Zendikar creature: Terra Stomper.
(And older cards from the past couple of blocks, such as Cloudthresher)
So now the question is, is timmy too fast? I have a feeling an 8/8 trampler that can't be countered is just going to be a pain in the ass. Don't get me wrong, if I was playing I'd play it myself, but the question is, is Wizards making it too easy for timmy players?
For me, I think it's pretty balanced so far. I don't think "timmy" is a winning strategy, but when I was playing during Lorwyn it was exciting when I was playing on MWS and my opponent would suddenly play a big 'ol 7/7 beastie. You just never saw that before, because they were so slow - before a 7/6 with no abilities would cost 8 (Scaled Wurm) but now we're getting 8/8's with trample for 2 mana less. No one would play Scaled Wurm outside of casual but now power is actually viable, and I'm loving it because I've always been a "smash your face in with a 10/10 on turn 5" kind of guy. What concerns me is how far Wizards will take it. I mean, 8/8 trample for 6 mana is pretty extreme already...and Wizards is just getting started, and we all know how they like to be all "innovative" and "push the boundries" ...
