Bilbo found 3 trolls eating mutton around a campfire at night. He snuck around, but was caught. They put him into a bag, and argued about what way they should cook him. Bilbo threw his voice, and made the trolls get into a fight. They didn't notice that the sun was coming up[ and were turned to stone

Didn't The Fellowship of the Ring movie pretty much summarize The Hobbit in the first ten minutes of it? That's what my friend said.

It summarizes stuff WAY before the hobbit, like the forging of the Rings, about the great battle.

So it gives information that wasn't even in the Hobbit? That's pretty cool

There's a host of other books set in Middle-Earth. The Silmarillion is just one. You can find anything in one of those books.
Edit by piñata: Fixed spelling of "Silmarillion".

The only thing in the hobbit that relates to LOTR is the ring of power and Gollum.

What about Bilbo?

You've got a point, Red. A lot of minor stuff about Bilbo, Gandalf and even Shelob (well, her race and where she originated from anyway) is in this book. But, the only really huge detail is the finding of the ring and the Gollum chapter.
