OK, here's one I've been having an argument about with some friends. If you had a Trinisphere out, untapped, and you tried to play something like Outbreak, could you play it for the alternate cost, and have the sphere change the alternate cost from "Discard a swamp" to "3"? I think it does, I'm trying to see if I'm correct in that.

I don't think it does. The alternate costs spells say "instead of paying the mana cost" which I assume to mean that you don't have to pay any mana, just the alterante cost. I could be wrong.

you are wrong, Bass. whenever you play a spell, you must pay all required costs. if this cost is less than 3 mana and Trinisphere is in play, it will cost 3. if you play Force of Will, you can either pay 3UU or you can pay 1 life and remove a blue card in your hand from the game. if Trinisphere is in play, you will pay 3UU or pay 1 life and remove a blue card in your hand from the game and pay 3.

I'm curious whether he knew that ruling off the top of his head or had to look it up.

Trinisphere causes a lot of problems so as soon as i saw the card i made sure i knew everything about how it works. IMO, paying 3 for FOW's alt cost is logical, but it is always good to check to make sure.
