I know many people (including myself occasionally) who use proxys to test a deck before actually investing in the real cards. Certain people have told me that its a cheap way of doing things that only cheaters take part in. I would like to hear other opinions on the subject.

I use proxys only in games with my friends or if i dont have the card and i am going to get it soon. I consider it very stupid when people go and get a 4000 dollar deck off the internet and play with it when you know they will never make it.

I constantly use proxies. When I design a new deck I think I might want to take to a tourney, I proxy it and play it against my friends. Obviously, proxies are a NONO in a Tourney, should you not own the card. My local cardshop actually allowes you as many proxies in Friday Night magic as you want.
So....Casual - YES Tourney - NO My oppinion

Well seeing as how R&D employees actually suggest them, and most big players use them, I would definetly say its all right, as long as you make sure your friends, (like me and paul ;D), agree.

And i also use them to test out decks so that i dont have to waste money on a deck that doesnt work.

Yea, I like to playtest w/ proxys. It helps, because I am not rich, and I not want to waste money on a card that doesn't work that well in my deck.

The only time I've made a proxy is of a Forgotten Ancient that was stolen. One of my friends was mad about that for some reason, the other one thought it was ok. But, anyway, I think they'd be ok to playtest a deck with. I'm actually in the process of making my own set, and I'll probably proxy the whole set.

As long as your whole deck isn't proxyed, I think it's ok. With card prices soaring, it's understandble to me that people have good deck ideas but not enough money to spend on them.

I have lately been using them to test out decks I plan to make in the summer when I have money, and for a tourney I plan to go to for my bday. But then I got bored with my old decks, my crappy 3000 card collection, so I proxied a whole deck. I made my friends fully aware that it was all proxied and half banned and restricted, but one of them still played me....hehe....reanimator...hehe...you can guess the results....

I think the best way to test a deck is to Apprentice it. But that's just me.

That may be true, redorblue1, but how do you know if they are really playing a certain format deck? You can't!

That's a good point...I never thought about that. Anyway, proxies are good when used in moderation or playtesting. Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong ;D.

I only proxie cards that I actually intend to get. So, in other words, I dont go around proxying the P9 or anything. I think thats just lame as hell is people do that.

I never enter tournaments, and I have a few good friends that come over and play every weekend or so. We like to play Classic, and we like things to be even, so naturally proxying is the way to go. I'm not going to go out and buy Moxes just for casual play.

Yeah, that's what I mean. It's not worth it to spend that much money. I play for fun and if that means proxys, so be it (even though I don't proxy like every card, that's just annoying).
