Wow, this edition was absolutely amazing. The additional scenes (over 50 minutes worth) are incredible, and more importantly, reveal that Peter Jackson actually thought about staying true to the book while he was creating the movies. There are four main events that were included in the extra footage that were from the book:
- The meeting between Gandalf and the Nazgul King - Frodo and Sam being discovered by a group of Orcs, and having to walk with them pretending to be Orcs - The healing house at Minas Tirith after the battle where Faramir and Eowyn meet, and - When the group approaches the Black Gate after the battle of Minas Tirith, they are greeted by The Mouth of Sauron (who I dearly missed from the original version)
Anyways, I definately recommend picking up the extended edition, not only for the additional footage, but for the loads and loads of commentary and behind the scenes action.

You forgot the death of Saruman and Wormtounge (even though it happens at a diff time in the books. ) EDIT: I dearly missed the healing house much more then mouth of Sauron.

Oh yes, sorry, I did forget that. Wormtounge kills Saruman ontop of Orthanc, then Legolas shoots Wormtounge...Gives some closure, although I knew at that point that there was not going to be a Scourning of the Shire...
*Sighs*
btw, I was watching the extras on there...Really interesting stuff.
