What did you think of this character in "The Hobbit"? Was he cool just because he was a dragon, or did he have a small enough part so as to be a waste of pages? I was really surprised how little the story focused on him -- I had the impression before reading the book that he was to be the main villain.

I actually thought that was pretty cool. I prefer intelligent dragons (from Tolkien's work as well as my own) to the mindless beasts in "Harry Potter".
But still, I was expecting him to be a much more important character.
Oh, and if you want a smart dragon, try Glaurung in "The Silmarillion". His level of intelligence is actually one of the more sary things about him.

Oh yeah, Glaurung's the one who manages to screw Turin's life over... I kind of liked Smaug's part in the Hobbit... It provides a nice ... not exactly climax, but just when the dragon is dead and the quest is over... it isn't over. Kind of like LotR in that respect.
