This is a thread for you and fellow gamers to discuss games that you have played. Basically you just tell us what you think about games you have. You can recommend games or warn others about how horrible games are. And yes, you can review games that have already be mentioned because different people have different opinions.
I don't have time to review any games right now, but i will later.
I copied what was in Jacen's post and will add on to it if anyone ever reviews stuff here. I don't mind if you make your reviews the 'unorganized' way instead of rating EVERYthing about the game, as long as you give and overall.
All reviews are X/10

We need to set up catigories for ration them. I suggest we do X.X/10 and use the catigories Presentation This category includes everything from the quality of the manual and packaging to the menu layout and game options. We also consider the overall production, licenses, and style of the game here Graphics How the game looks as well as technical issues like animation quality, texture design, and framerate. Sound This category rates the quality of the sound effects and voice acting as well as the music in the game Gameplay In a nutshell, how fun and satisfying the game is to play. Usually considered the most important part of any title, this category encompasses the controls, design, and overall feel of the game Lasting Appeal This rates how much time you're likely to spend with the game before you get tired of it. This rating also reflects the depth of the game and options such as multiplay and mini-games that keep you going after you finish the single-player experience. We should do a rating for each of these and then an overall. The overall should not be an average. Ratings Summary Here is where all the ratings written on this page will be contained and i will try to keep active links to each review. Please inform me if any links are broken. With that said.
XIII (Thirteen) (X-Box)
Presentation 9.4 This game has an overabundance of style. The menus look like their taken directly out of a graphic novel.
Graphics 8.3 Looks like a truly interactive graphic novel. The character models are great, using classic combic book design, dark black outlines with amazing cellshading. The environments are not quite as spectacular. This is especially evident in the snow covered levels.
Sound 8.9 Good music, voice acting by David Duchovny. Simply excelent. But the sound of the guns are not quite as good.
Gameplay 9.1 This game is fun to play. The AI isnt too great and the environments need some work, but that doesnt take away from the fun of the game too much. The game has a great, the best story ever in a FPS. Headshots are oh so satisfying. But it really doesnt deviate itself from any other FPS.
Lasting Appeal 9.6 The multiplayer is great. X-Box live compatibility Makes the multiplayer so much better.
Overall 8.9 Overall one of the best FPS on the market. Good graphics. Great sound. An amazing multiplayer. Its got style to burn. Such a fun game. Better than Halo.
[edit]I may be biased i love this kind of game[/edit]
Well i guess i can do another one.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (X-Box)
Presentation 10.0 Slick menus. Excelent story telling. Great in game videos, expecially the bathtub scene with Ferah ;D. A great transition from the original and much loved Prince of Persia.
Graphics 9.5 Stunning graphics. Huge, well detailed environments. Great character models. Great framerate. Graphically one of the best games of 2003.
Sound 9.2 Fitting music, good sound effects, good and sometimes funny voice acting. I always get a chuckle when he talks to himself, then yells at himself for it.
Gameplay 9.7 Fun, challenging and overall spectacular. The only even minor complaint is that the combat is all done with 1 or 2 buttons and is not as well refined as the rest of the game.
Lasting Appeal 8.7 This is the only place this game falls short. A dedicated player will blast through this is a week or two. Even though it has the original Prince of Persia and the secnd Prince of Persia the single player is a little short for my taste.
Overall 9.6 One of the best games of 2003. Definate Game of the year potential. Stunning graphics, a slick presentation, good sound and fun gameplay. But in lasting apeal this game falls short. after one play throught you probibly won't want to play through it again. Despite that still my pick for Game of The Year.

*Pokes Jacen with stick* Is it human? Anywho, this is what i was expecting... Manhunt- This game is crazy. The storyline is whack, your a DEAD guy that was brought back to life so you can be hunted down again. Which means it's a stealth game. You gotta stay away from the light, lure your enemies to the shadows so you can jump them from behind and...well...kill them. The game is VERY violent, each time you kill some one it shows a very violent little video clip of you killing the guy. The game is also puzzling. You have to find a way to kill 1 guy at a time, which means if there are 2 guys close to each other, you have to find a way to get them away from each other without them seeing you. If you make a noise when they are together, they will BOTH come looking for you, which means when they stop looking for you its hard to kill 1 without the other seeing you. But sometimes it's alright, if you are seen, you DON'T automatically lose like some other stealth games, instead you have to fight the guy, which isn't a walk in the park. They are just as strong as you, and have just as powerful weapons. After you get the hang of fighting it probably won't be as much a problem. I havn't finished the game yet, so some of this may be a little inaccurate, i havn't even really gotten to any long range weapons except for a nail gun. But overall, i give it an 8, out of 10.

But why not just review a game that you have...and...stuff?
Here, i'll try to do Manhunt your way.
Presentation- ? Uhhh...yellow?
Graphic-8.1 The game looks great, the only problem i have had was shooting. I was up on some steps shooting down on some people, and it wouldn't let you shoot them, kinda silly if you ask me. But that was the only technical issue i saw.
Sound-9.8 After luring a 'hunter' into the shadows, the hunter will start trying to call you out. They also call you a ton of different names and are constantly insulting you, even though they aren't sure if you are there or not. This is very entertaining itself.
Gameplay-8.9 After killing someone and seeing that short video clip of you killing him, you just want to do it again and again. And there is such a wide range of these videos. When you are behind someone, you hold X, and you have arrows that change from white to yellow and then to red. The longer you wait, the more violent and more satisfying the video. And with all the weapons you can have, its alot of fun.
Lasting Appeal-? I havn't finished it yet, so i don't really know, but so far it would have to be pretty high.

HURRY UP DEVO!
*spontaniously combusts*

meh. My bad. Sorry. Please un-combust.
Presentation-9.5/10 Like it's predecessor, FFX-2 uses the sphere theme. There is no sphere grid per say like the last game, but everything revolves around spheres, and the menus are easy to navigate and make nice little sounds and animations when you navigate. Square Enix introduces enough new concepts in terms of game mechanics to set it apart from X as well as any other RPG.
Graphics 8/10 Exactly the same graphics as FFX. Not just the same graphics, but the same maps as well. 2 years ago those graphics were top of the line. Now they're still stunning, but a bit dated.
Sound 9/10 Real voice acting for all characters with roles in cutscenes (and there are a number of them) One of the lasting appeals of FFX was the different character voices and how well they were done. Wakka, Lulu, Rikku, Yuna, O'aka, Kimahri, etc. all are back with some new voices as well. Like X, X-2 features random comments throughout the course of the battle that add a bit of humor and life to the game.
Gameplay 9/10 easy to understand, easy to play, smooth controls, no obscure camera angles, and friendly and enjoyable gameplay mechanics, including a small bit of platforming. Battle system is not as good as X, but I felt that X had the best RPG battle system ever, so no big letdown.
Lasting Appeal 9/10 I'll probably see this game through to the end. Considering that it's a 60+ hour investment to do everything in the game, that's pretty good. And I'll probably play it through a second time
Overall- 9/10

I think i've got it. Is it like...say i'm on a sphere, and i move a few spheres over or whatever. The greyed out line changes to a color, so each sphere connected with the colored line are like...activated. And my character(whoevers grid i'm on) gets all the stuff in the spheres...right?
|
|
|
Post by devo2 on Jan 5, 2004 20:54:28 GMT -5
not exactly, you need to activate nodes on the sphere grid by using spheres. (for a strength +2 node you need a power sphere, for an agility booster you need a speed sphere, etc) and you can activate whatever sphere you're on as well as any adjacent sphere. THe grayed out line changing to color only indicates that you've travelled along that path, not that you've activated any nodes.

America's Army 2.0 DescritionAmerica's Army is a free game produced by the United States Army. It can be downloaded at the link provided above. It's an online First Person Shooter. You play in squads of real people and attempt to achive a goal against another team of real people. Presentation 9.0 Throught its evolutions America's Army has become a very sleek and good looking game. The menus have been changed and upgraded. Most of the problems inherent in the early versions have been removed. Graphics 8.5 The graphics arn't first rate but that is to be expected in a free game. The character models arn't the greatest but hte guns look quite realistic. The environments fall somewhere inbetween. Sound 9.0 Guns sound great, bullets Zings are quite well done. The verbal commands can get very repetitive. I mean how many times can you stand to hear "FRAG OUT" in one day. Gameplay 9.0 Fun to play, but hard to learn. One mistake can get you PWNED. Once you get good this game becomes very fun to play. Lasting Appeal 9.5 Because the Army is updating frequently and it is an online game this game really has some good replay value. Every few updates new weapons and new maps become avaliable. This game can maintain your interest for several months. Overall 9.0 What can i say, it's free and its fun. The price can't be beat. The price easily equals out any problems seen. The graphics are ok the sound is pretty good and the gameplay is fun. Project Gotham Racing 2 (X-Box)Presentation 10.0 Everything you could ask for from a racing game. A fun single player, online play and a healthy selection of cars. Graphics 9.4 Cars look very realistic. Environments look prety nice but arn't very varied. Sound 9.0 The licenced music is quite good. The sound effects are ok, and the ability to listen to your own music makes the selection that much larger and more interesting. Gameplay 9.5 Arcade style racing the way it's supposed to be. Easy to pick up and play but hard to get any good at. Requires some practice to master the art of power sliding. Lasting Appeal 10.0 It's online, it has downloadable content, it's going to have a long life in your disk drive. Overall 9.5 It's online (in case you havn't noticed i like online games) so that adds a lot to the game. It looks good and has a decent soundtrack. It's fun to play and has a lot of life. If you like racing this is the game for you. EBP: Merged double post.

Final Fantasy VI (US III) Squaresoft SNES
Presentation: 9/10
The box art features a Moogle leaning on a sword with the logo above it. That makes you want to keep the box alone. Then we have the game manual. Not only does it have everything you need to know about the game, but it also features artwork by Yofecal matteraka Amano, which are beautiful. It also has ten of the twelve characters (not including the two secret ones) and a breif bio of them and their abilities. How cool is that?
Graphics: N/A
I don't rate graphics. I don't care about graphics. It's the gameplay that counts, graphics only make the game look pretty.
Sound: 10/10
Okay, I can say that this game holds the best soundtrack out of any Final Fantasy game. Nobuo Uematsu has truely outdone himself with this track. From the piano to orchestrals, it is all too great.
Gameplay: 10/10
Lets just start with the storyline first. The story is gripping; one of the best I've seen in any game. But I'm not gonna spoil any of it for you who haen't played. Just take my word for it. Then we have scenarios were you get to choose which party members go on your team, and who just sits on the airship. You customize each of your character (and there are 12!) with any magics you want (providing you have the Magicite to equip your characters). And each characters have their own special ability, which can be real fun when you decide you will be in your group. The controls are very straightfoward, it will take no time at all to master. As with most RPGs. The game is pretty long, so it should take you awhile to beat. Although it's great to try and find all the secrets and level up your characters. =)
Lasting Appeal: 9/10
As with most RPGs, once you've beaten it, you don't really want to play it again for some time. However, you will want to play this more than once.
Overall: 9.5/10
MUCH LATER EDIT: ARRRGH, That Stupid censoring THING!
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Konami Playstation (1)
Prelogue: I was very, very happy I found this game. I was craving it for some time now, and I finally recieved it last week. For the duration of this week, I was able to play through the game, and get all it's secrets and so on. Konami took a different spin with their series, and made it RPG like. Not to worry Castlevania fans, I assure you that this game most definitly lives up to the series. You play as Alucard (Dracula's son) who senses evil in the old castle of Castlevania, so you must go there and tredge through the enormous castle to try and stop it. Now, without further or do, here is my reveiw.
Presentation: 9/10 Okay, the the cover of the game features a big castle with lightning in the background. This is truely disheartening, since this can convince players that this game might suck. It could have been a LOT better. Like...the picture inside the case! Anyway, in the manual you will find everything you need to know how to play this game and some character bios and so on. As for options, there isn't really a need for any.
Graphics: N/A It's 2-D sidescrolling, with smooth detailed graphics. Thats all you really need to know.
Sound: 9.5/10 Oh my God! The tracks in this game are truely amazing. There are some nice choir pieces, and re-vamped Castlevania music that just sounds wonderful. The sound effects are great too, like when Alucard casts a spell or gets hit. I took a .5 off because I thought that the voice acting wasn't great and needed a bit of work.
Gameplay: 10/10 I must say, this is a Castlevania fan's wet dream. The game play is much like a 2D Zelda, were you must explore huge sections of the Castle and find items and learn new skills and level up. There is a legion of different enemies and bosses to face, each having different attacks and strategies. There are hundreds of weapons armor and items to collect and use. So many different areas to explore. There are also secrets to find. There is just a lot of things to do! The controls are pretty basic, it may be hard to perform some spells and attacks, but not really hard.
Lasting Appeal: 9.5/10 Even after you beat the game, you probably haven't beaten it. There are LOTS of secrets and items to discover, plus you can play as two other characters (if you know the secret). Really, you'll want to play this again and again.
Final Score: 9.5/10 Castlevania fans won't be disappointed.
EBP: Merged double post.
